Box Office: The Farewell by Lulu Wang

Latest News

Here is a gem already in the running for the Golden Globes.

Billi (Awkwafina), a young Chinese-American living in New York, learns from her aunt that her grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen) is suffering from an incurable illness. Her family, scattered between the United States and Japan, then decides to go to China to say their goodbyes under the pretext of celebrating a cousin’s wedding. Because Nai Nai knows nothing of her condition.

Lulu Wang succeeds in making a weightless film, where the gravity of the subject never prevents laughter from bursting forth. Her narrative depicts touching reunions in the Chinese diaspora and the difficulty of healing wounds. Should they have gone to the other side of the world, or stayed here? And should they tell Nai Nai that her days seem numbered?

Each character in this delightful gathering has a firm opinion on these questions.
