A Look Back at the Fight That Marked Boxing and the History of French Sport.
On July 2, 1921, the French champion Georges Carpentier faced the American Jack Dempsey in a legendary fight in Jersey City in front of over 80,000 spectators. Despite his defeat, the event made Carpentier a national hero, the first true sports celebrity in France.
To celebrate this champion with an extraordinary destiny, the National Sports Museum, as part of the temporary exhibition “Boxing – The Call of the Ring,” is organizing a special evening this Friday at 7 p.m. with an exclusive screening of the documentary “The Gentleman of the Ring,” followed by a discussion with Thierry Derouet, the film’s producer, and Philippe Sudreau, Georges Carpentier’s grandson.
