Saturday, March 26, 2011, starting at 9 a.m. at the National Conservatory of Regional Influence in Nice

The National Conservatory of Regional Influence in Nice, in association with the Conservatories and music schools of the Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco, is celebrating brass instruments (trumpet, cornet, horn, trombone, tuba) on March 26, 2011. Over a hundred students and teachers will participate in this day. This year, the Conservatory hosts Antoine Curé, a professor at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris.

Antoine Curé began playing the trumpet at the Bayeux School of Music. He continued his musical studies at the Conservatories of Caen and Grenoble. In 1970, he entered the National Conservatory of Music in Paris in Ludovic Vaillant’s class. He obtained two first prizes there: trumpet and chamber music. He won the gold medal at the G. Viotti International Competition in Vercelli, Italy, as well as the 2nd prize at the Toulon International Competition. He is also a laureate of the Vocation Foundation. Initially the principal trumpeter at Concerts Colonne, he joined the Ensemble Intercontemporain led by Pierre Boulez in 1981, as a soloist. He still holds this position.

He was a professor at the Ville d’Avray Conservatory. In 1988, he was appointed professor at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris. He is regularly invited to summer academies in Nice, Orford (Canada), and Japan. He has participated in numerous recordings as an orchestra musician and also as a soloist. He also recorded a disc on the three trumpet concertos by Jean-Michel Defaye.

In 1994, he premiered “Midtown,” for two trumpets, by Philippe Fénelon, as well as the French premiere of Hans Werner Henze’s Requiem in 1996. He is also the creator of “Metal Extension” by Yan Maresz, “2005 in Tokyo” by Masakazu Natsuda, and the solo trumpet piece by Hitomi Kaneko, “La couche du temps.”

Brass Band

This ensemble, punctuated by percussion, brings together all the brass instruments, from the cornet (the highest) to the tuba (the lowest), including flugelhorn, alto saxhorns, baritones, euphoniums, and trombones.
This original ensemble with nuanced sounds was born from a beautiful initiative: to bring together, in one group, the best “brass” musicians of the department and to provide them with a particularly favorable place for the expression of their talent. Originating the project were Gérard Hostein, trumpet teacher and director of the Antibes Music Conservatory, and his friend Philippe Bleuez, a professor at the Nice Conservatory. Over 8 years ago, these two musicians decided to bring together students from music conservatories, amateur musicians, and professionals.
