Call for donations for the restoration of Saint-Pons Abbey

Latest News

The Abbey of Saint-Pons in Nice is one of the oldest monasteries on the French Riviera. Classified as a historical monument by order dated May 3, 1913, the facades and the roofs of the abbey and the cloister are as well.

The abbatial church of Saint-Pons in Nice has been closed to the public since 1999. Threatened with degradation, it is currently undergoing a comprehensive restoration program to highlight the richness of its history and its Turin-inspired architecture.

As part of the exhibition “Extases” in 2016, the city of Nice launched a first donation appeal for the restoration of this church.

The official signing of an agreement between the City of Nice and the Heritage Foundation on January 16, 2017, formalized this donation appeal. It is, therefore, a call for everyone’s generosity.

Renovation work began in October 2016, with an opening planned for early 2019.

Currently, work is focused on the exterior of the church. The facade and the bell tower were first cleaned before undertaking a conservation study of the original coatings. The damaged coatings have been restored, and a patina is applied to the entire building to protect it.

The main bell tower and the secondary bell tower (originally unfinished) are being strictly restored in conservation. From the last quarter of this year, interior work will begin, including the restoration of all chapels, gildings, faux-marble decorations, and pilasters.

The complete restoration of the building is estimated at โ‚ฌ2,855,000.
