Chikungunya in Antibes: authorities strengthen their efforts in response to the epidemic outbreak

Latest News

Since July, more than one hundred local cases have been recorded in Antibes. The ARS, the city, and the Prefecture are multiplying measures to contain transmission and raise public awareness.

Since July 2025, Antibes has been facing a chikungunya outbreak. This viral disease, transmitted by the tiger mosquito, is experiencing an unprecedented scale here in mainland France.
As of September 23, Public Health France has recorded 103 local cases in the commune. The Alpes-Maritimes department totals 140 cases and the Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur region accounts for 312. New cases continue to be reported daily.

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur, the Prefecture, and the City of Antibes are coordinating their actions. The goal is twofold: to slow down the circulation of the virus and protect the residents.

Investigations, care, and localized information

Several measures are being deployed on the ground. Epidemiological and entomological investigations help in identifying cases and locating areas of presence of the tiger mosquito. The Interdepartmental Agreement for Mosquito Control (EID) carries out treatments around confirmed cases. The city of Antibes provides logistical support, particularly in the neighborhoods of Saint-Claude and the Rabiac cemetery.

Healthcare professionals are regularly informed by the ARS. Doctors, pharmacists, and laboratories receive specific recommendations to recognize symptoms and guide patients. The Territorial Professional Health Community (CPTS) Antipolis participates in this effort by strengthening the offer of consultations.

Communication with the general public is also a major focus. An information leaflet has been distributed by the Health Insurance. Mediators meet residents in certain busy areas such as the Saint-Claude shopping center. At the beginning of September, more than 11,000 residents in the northern part of Antibes received an informational SMS.

An FR-Alert system will be activated tomorrow, September 24, at 10 a.m. It will send a prevention message to everyone present in the commune. This message will remind them of essential guidelines: protect against bites, see a doctor in case of fever, joint pain, or skin rash, and eliminate stagnant water.

Steps to limit the spread

The authorities emphasize the role of each individual in the fight against chikungunya. Residents are encouraged to apply repellent, wear loose and covering clothing, and install mosquito nets for vulnerable individuals. Unproven bracelets and devices are not recommended.

In case of symptoms, it is advised to consult your attending physician without delay and limit your movements for a week. This precaution reduces the risk of virus transmission to other areas.

Prevention also involves eliminating larval habitats. Flower pot saucers, watering cans, or garden tarps should be emptied regularly. Water reserves should be covered or protected by mosquito nets.

The situation remains evolving. Local authorities call on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate to contain this unprecedented outbreak.
