The mayor of Nice was a guest on the show “Les 4 vรฉritรฉs” this morning on France 2. He spoke about several current topics and addressed the controversy surrounding a mother being evicted from her social housing.

During this program, Christian Estrosi revisited the controversy we mentioned yesterday: the case of the mother evicted from her apartment in a housing estate after her 19-year-old son was convicted of drug trafficking. Anthony Borrรฉ, one of the deputy mayors of Nice, defended this decision yesterday: “With the prosecutor and the prefect, we signed an agreement that allows us, when the tenant or a person under their responsibility (…) commits serious offenses, to obtain an eviction from the courts.”

When France 2 journalist Caroline Roux voiced the concerns of associations by saying that this decision amounts “to condemning individuals for actions they did not commit, but were committed by their relatives,” the vice-president of the PACA region explained that it was: “a judicial decision, made by the judge.”

He validated this sanction with the Public Prosecutor of Nice and the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes: “We’re fed up with seeing a family ruin the lives of tenants in the same building. We’re talking about a family whose members, the heads of this family, have received I don’t know how many warnings since 2018 because one or more individuals are dealing drugs, causing noise disturbances, vandalizing mailboxes and building lobbies, and breaking shop windows. Since 2018, after issuing multiple warnings, don’t you think the mother, meaning the head of the family, could have acted? We finally obtained a judicial decision that will set a precedent.”

The leader of the azure capital even announced that this type of decision was just the beginning: “This won’t stop here. We are initiating other procedures for families in similar situations. We haven’t invested 750 million euros in Nice to renovate the estates and refurbish all the neighborhoods in urban renewal areas, just to have families that continue to ruin the lives of those who wish to find peace in their homes and live with dignity.”
