There was a big surprise at the Metropolitan Council on Wednesday, July 10th, as 133 delegates gathered to discuss several deliberations. The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, announced his resignation from the position of President of the Metropolis, during his final speech.
« My dear colleagues, a period comes to an end »
His decision was made due to differences, oppositions, and tensions within the group.
« Like all of France and our entire region, we must face political restructuring and the rise of extremes, both left and right. During the recently concluded electoral campaign, some of you made very hostile statements regarding the metropolis, its actions, and its services. Was this posturing or conviction? », mentioned Christian Estrosi during his speech.
He concluded with these words: « As elected officials, we have a duty of clarity and consistency. We owe it to our fellow citizens for whom and in whose name we work here and elsewhere. As it is not conceivable for me to preside over an executive that includes far-right or far-left officials, or their supporters, and as the confusion reigning in our assembly degrades the image and action of our Metropolis, I inform you that I have decided to resign from my role as President of the Metropolis ».
A way to clarify the situation
The speech sparked reactions, such as that from Louis Nègre, deputy president and mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer: « The situation is a bit complex and we observe that we have very well-known external oppositions and a fracture that is gradually occurring. But also internal divergent positions in which the majority is no longer followed. The president proceeds with a clarification operation so that everyone can position themselves where they wish »
The entire procedure is then set in motion to re-elect a president, the bureaus, and the commissions.
« I have already received the candidacy of Christian Estrosi who will run again for the position of President of the Metropolis », added Louis Nègre. A good way to clarify the situation and take responsibility towards the French people and the Metropolis.
