The situation continues to worsen in Afghanistan. On Sunday, the country fell into the hands of the Taliban, and since then, the population has been desperately trying to flee. In an interview with RTL, Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, expressed opposition to welcoming Afghan refugees in his town.

“Afghanistan: ‘No, I do not want to receive refugees here, it is clear. Our city has been a significant victim of terrorism in recent years, let’s implement an immigration policy with quotas’,” @cestrosi on #RTLMatin with @JeromeFlorin.

“It must be very clear, the takeover of power by the Taliban is a threat to the security of the Western world and free countries,” criticized the mayor of Nice on RTL. Paradoxically, Christian Estrosi says he does not want to abandon Afghan refugees; however, is he prepared to receive them? The answer is categorical: “No.” The mayor of Nice clarified that his town had been targeted by terrorist attacks several times in recent years. Hence, he advocates returning to a migration policy of “quotas” similar to the mandate of Nicolas Sarkozy, by processing asylum requests before arrival on French territory and authorizing facial identification for the 3,800 cameras in the town for those on the S list.

The cities of Marseille, Strasbourg, Lyon, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand, Laval, Nancy, and Rouen have expressed readiness to welcome Afghan refugees.

Emmanuel Macron has assured that France will provide aid to “those who are most threatened.” However, the French president expressed concerns. “We must anticipate and protect ourselves against significant irregular migratory flows that would endanger those who take these routes and fuel trafficking of all kinds.” On August 24, the United Nations Human Rights Council is expected to meet to provide responses to the situation in Afghanistan.
