It is said that decisions are made based on three options: by chance, by vocation, by necessity. We do not know which of these three was the origin of this initiative by the mayor of Nice in his role as president of Euromed, but we can only endorse his approach.
Rather than confining himself to a compulsive tropism that tries to set up guardrails, moreover unnecessary and ineffective, against the probable migration of populations coming from the other side of the Mediterranean after the political events that have unfolded recently, Christian Estrosi has decided to set the bar higher and to do so within the collective framework of Euromed.
A very good option because the illusion of doing it alone would have been an attempt to mystify the problem and a manifest declaration of strabismus: only decisions that involve a common will of all the actors involved, a pooling of resources, and the symbolic value of unity can have a chance, though difficult, of success. Assuming its complexity is already a first step towards the solution.
The Arab world on the other side of the Mediterranean is provoking an epic change, that of reclaiming its destiny. This will not happen, despite the wish of those who clearly do not understand much about geopolitics, in order and without often roundabout paths. Because history is a complicated path and does not foresee shortcuts.
But now, a new historical phase is opening: it relies on the ability to build a community of values, that recovers common foundational experiences, shared cultures, in other words, on civilizational roots.
“Mare Nostrum” is it not the cradle of the civilization of the peoples of the two shores? As Pericles said: “Happiness is freedom and freedom is courage”! So bravo Mr. Estrosi, fair winds and following seas.
