If there is one thing that the Mayor of Nice holds dear, it is the beautification of the metropolitan area. After the renovation of the green corridor, the construction of several bike paths, the expansion of the tram line, and ongoing works at the Mamac in Nice, Christian Estrosi is now embarking on the reinvention of the Port of Nice.
The president of the Alpes-Maritimes envisions a grand plan; this project extends beyond its infrastructures or various constructions. On the social network Twitter, he proudly announces “the creation of a Maritime Area” in which he intends to ensure protection along the entire coastline from the Baie des Anges to the Cap de Nice. In other words, he aims to prioritize a protected marine area.
Before diving headfirst into the works, the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, initially chose to plan a marine ecological plan. To do this, he calls for the regulation of both professional and traditional fishing as an economic and food sector. As he emphasizes on his Twitter account, Christian Estrosi wants to “energize the fishing trades” by setting up quality, top-of-the-line equipment. To register the Port of Nice in an ecological commitment, eradicating disposable plastic is an essential step. To transform the metropolis into a zero-plastic horizon, Christian Estrosi unfolds a project in three phases:
In January 2022, he will ban the use of single-use plastic in administrative buildings, public markets, and conventions. (The main objective is to eradicate plastic by 2024.) Requests for strengthening against environmental damage have also been mentioned.
In January 2023, the ban on the distribution of disposable plastic will be expanded in shops and large retailers.
In January 2024, there will be a suspension of plastic in all commercial activities in the territory.
“Through 3 years, the Metropole NCA will fully partake in the investment with the complete electrification of the docks of our 8 ports, thus eliminating nearly 95% of greenhouse gas emissions from ships. I am also reviving the plan for a maritime shuttle between Nice and Monaco.” — Christian Estrosi (@cestrosi) September 10, 2021
“The Great Jetty”
A new destination will emerge in the coming years in the metropolis. The port that the people of Nice were accustomed to will undergo a radical transformation. Christian Estrosi has everything planned, not a single detail has escaped him. Before wishing a second life to the good old Port of Nice, the mayor decided to create a building named “Maison de la Méditerranée.” This will be installed in the port area of the city by 2025 and will serve associations, schools, and businesses by providing educational spaces as well as conference and exhibition venues.
“I will not leave the port in this state,” announced the mayor of the city of Nice on his Twitter account. The reconstruction plan rests on several points, beginning with the requalification of the port basin and the reorganization of the space for each activity. The mayor is determined to remodel the traffic in the neighborhood and wants to act primarily on pollution sources in the port, as well as to reinforce the structure of the commercial quay to facilitate the positioning of cement ships.
“Moreover, I want to initiate a study to reinvent the Port of #Nice06. I will not leave it in this state. The goal is to restructure it, energize large yachting, recreational boating, fishing, requalify the quays, and create an Excellence Nautical Base by rehabilitating it.” — Christian Estrosi (@cestrosi) September 10, 2021
