In the late afternoon, the mayor of Nice announced a series of measures to address the recent rise in the number of hospitalizations in the department (14 patients in intensive care and 43 hospitalized as of today) over the past two weeks.
The acceleration of the virus’s spread over the past two weeks, marked by the department’s classification as a red zone, prompted Christian Estrosi and his Municipal Council to implement measures previously observed last spring during the lockdown. Their objective is to protect at-risk individuals and support the workforce. “I fully take responsibility for having to make decisions sometimes perceived as drastic and which may cause misunderstanding,” declared the mayor of Nice with determination.
Distribution of Masks and End of Visits to EHPADs
Among the decisions likely to ruffle feathers is the closure of visits to the four municipal EHPADs located in Nice. To keep in touch with loved ones, families can use a video call service. This solution was already introduced during the lockdown and was very successful in some establishments.
A new massive distribution of masks in Nice and across the entire Metropolis will be set up very soon. To benefit from it, as in April, one just needs to register on an online platform that will open from September 14. Once the conditions are met, this home delivery, in partnership with La Poste, will be organized to prevent everyone from having to travel within the city. “We have made strategic reserves to provide masks to people who need protection,” notes Christian Estrosi, who aims through this action to reduce a necessary expenditure for French households.
The phone information platform at 04.97.13.56.00 will soon be operational to inform locals about the measures taken based on the evolution of the health situation.
Sports and Culture Once Again Tested
While cultural event organizers were seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, the President of the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis is putting a halt to things. Initially scheduled for tonight, the presentation of the Nice Opera season is already postponed, as is the opening show entitled “Family Reunion,” which was to take place this weekend (September 12 and 13).
The Heritage Days scheduled for Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, are purely canceled in Nice.
While no decision has yet been made regarding the organization of sporting events in the coming days, associations and clubs are urged to act responsibly. The mayor asks, “as soon as a case of Covid-19 appears, to suspend the sporting activities of the group concerned to avoid clusters.”
