We were familiar with red milestone markers for national roads and yellow for departmental roads. Starting this Thursday, March 1st, the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis is inaugurating cyan blue markers. This new road signage unveiled by Christian Estrosi in Colomars will equip the 2044 kilometers of roads of the 46 municipalities that make up the metropolis.

A unique road network across the entire Metropolis

These new markers are just one aspect of the transfer of road management competences that is underway in the department. Where the road network management depended on interventions from the State, the general council, or the municipalities, there will now be just one operator: the metropolis. Whether driving in Carros or Nice, it’s “the same road network,” explains Christian Estrosi.
A transfer of competences also means transferring human and logistical resources. Nearly 1000 agents, supported by 213 vehicles (themselves branded with the metropolis colors) and 60 operational facilities, will manage 999 km of urban community roads, 800 km additionally transferred from the general council, and 245 of municipal roads.

Signage that sets a precedent

This metropolitan signage is a first, “unprecedented in our country,” explains Christian Estrosi. The cyan blue, “our color between the Mediterranean and Mercantour,” has received approval from the Road Safety and Traffic Delegation (DSCR). It now sets a precedent for all future metropolitan networks in France. Enough to make the game “le mille-bornes” seem outdated.
