The azure city will be the global capital of the world’s leading start-ups by hosting the first Unicorn Summit from October 6 to 9, 2021. The city’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, spoke about the city’s economic state and its envisioned future. Among other things, he discussed the implementation or not of 5G.
Nice is one of the most connected cities in France. The Mediterranean smart city has greatly evolved over the past fifteen years to best equip as many residents of Nice as possible. Current mayor since 2008, Christian Estrosi has made it one of his priorities. The metropolis has placed technological innovation and sustainable development at the heart of its economic development strategy. It’s for all these commitments that Nice has been elected the global capital of the world’s leading start-ups.
On Thursday morning, a conference organized by La Tribune was held and streamed live on YouTube, with Christian Estrosi in attendance. He answered a few questions while presenting the future of the metropolis and the role of 5G within it. The editor-in-chief of La Tribune’s South office, Laurence Bottero, asked him about the necessity of implementing 5G in Nice:
“We are determined not to fall a year or even six months behind, not even a week behind. It’s a topic on which I will not yield under any circumstances, considering those who foster a kind of climate — they did this with 2G, 3G, 4G. We know that in less than ten years, we will have 6G and that falling even slightly behind on 5G would call into question my entire model. […] Sending a message that I would yield to concerns about 5G, which so far no one has demonstrated presents any risk, would send an extremely negative signal. Especially in a city that I have also wanted to become a university city. […] We are a smart city, and we intend to remain one of the leading ones in France and Europe.”
The message is clear: Nice is and wants to remain one of the most attractive technological metropolises in France and Europe.
