Cigarette Butt Clean-Up on University Campuses

Latest News

Did you know? 70 billion cigarette butts are produced each year in France, and 40 billion are thrown on the ground. A single cigarette butt can pollute up to 400 liters of water, as rainwater passes through it. Cigarette butts contain more than 2,500 toxic chemical components, some of which are carcinogenic. They can be found in the streets and in groundwater: it is not only a matter of visual and environmental pollution but also a public health issue.

In this context and as part of an eco-responsible initiative by Universitรฉ Cรดte dโ€™Azur focusing on waste reduction, recycling, and recovery, a large awareness campaign is being organized this Friday starting at 1 PM.

Several starting points have been defined: BU Sciences, Valrose, BU LASH, Carlone, BU Law, Trotabas, BU St Jean dโ€™Angely, BU J.A Dieudonnรฉ, BU Archet, IMREDD.

Three years ago, the UFR LASH and the BDE, sensitive to this issue, launched the cigarette butt ashtrays associated with voting boxes. Two are now ready for use on the Carlone campus, and the BDE will be associated with the proposed voting objects.

The collected cigarette butts will be deposited in urns and weighed in front of the libraries on each campus. A photo of each collection and its participants will then be taken.
