An “off-site” exhibition presented by the International Center of Contemporary Art of Carros during the Cinรฉalma Festival 2011. One of the missions of the International Center of Contemporary Art since its opening in 1998 is to highlight the regional artistic memory. Thanks to the artists themselves, the CIAC has quickly been endowed with an exceptional heritage that demonstrates the richness of creation on our shores.
The artist
Born in Nice in 1924, Michel Gaudet is an essential figure in the artistic community, a role he has played for decades with tact and discretion. A man of many talents (painter, prominent member of the International Association of Art Critics, former president of the Maison des Artistes of Cagnes-sur-Mer, as well as a journalist, writer, and lecturer). He is passionate about sharing his knowledge with as many people as possible and making art accessible to all. His work, that of an “explorer of the most secret paths of matter and color,” breathes freedom of expression because Michel Gaudet has never submitted to a movement and never bowed to fashion. He has thought of only one thing: serving painting.
The works
The paintings of Michel Gaudet presented in the hall of the Juliette Grรฉco room are part of a donation made in 2004 by the artist to the city of Carros. They are taken from his series titled “Moroccan Suite” (1996-1999). During this period, he frequently traveled to Morocco with his wife, who was originally from Marrakech. This Mediterranean influence emerges in this series which, without being figurative, reveals motifs reminiscent of Islam, evocations of minarets, and reminiscences of the architecture encountered in the countries of the Maghreb.
