Ex malum bonum is a Latin expression that can be effectively applied to these contemporary announcements by the two local right-wing rivals: out of evil, good may come.
One might have the right to be a bit weary of the incessant and mutual criticisms between the two big shots competing for local power: who is really interested in who will become the departmental president of Les Rรฉpublicains (an empty shell) besides the two competitors, their entourages, and a few thousand party members?
Just for the record, the department has over a million inhabitants, which shows the proportion. And yet…
But then, in the end, when you see the announcements… you might think it’s a boon!
Indeed, in the race for primacy, the populist and the audacious have chosen the same tactic: to speak to taxpayers more than to citizens, going straight for their wallets.
As for the political line, the clarification between the conservative right and the progressive right, weโll see about that later, some other time.
Ex malum bonum: indeed, the Latins knew how to define acts and facts with the right words: the expression is perfectly suited for the residents… and voters of Nice and the Cรดte d’Azur.
And we’re only at the first act of the competition: the departmental presidency of Les Rรฉpublicains. Just imagine when it’s time for the municipal elections in 2020! Then it will be serious, and tax gifts will rain from the sky.
Too bad there aren’t elections every year! We could line our pockets!
Eric Ciotti, president of the Finance Committee of the Departmental Council, announced on Thursday, in front of many departmental officials, an “extraordinary” reduction in departmental taxation.
The rate levied by the department on property tax will drop from 12.42% to 11.8% as of next year, a 5% decrease.
“This is a volume of 15 million euros that is thus returned to the taxpayers of the Cรดte d’Azur,” he commented.
Christian Estrosi, president of the Metropolis, on the other hand, will propose to the Metropolitan Council a reduction in the household waste collection tax (TEOM) by one point, representing “a total gain of 20 million euros for the residents of 49 municipalities in the metropolis” starting in 2019.
As Mayor of Nice, a reduction in the property tax will offset the creation of this tax at the metropolitan level just a few months ago.
The Mayor of Nice and President of the Metropolis took advantage of a luncheon with UPE 06 entrepreneurs to respond indirectly to Eric Ciotti, who accuses him of unbalanced financial management, stating the “exemplary management of @MetropoleNCA and @VilledeNice by Prefect Leclerc” during his speech.
He further clarified in a statement: “24 million euros of purchasing power in the city of Nice in 2019. In comparison, the Departmental Council will return 15 million euros for the entire department in the same year.”
