Civic Pact: A Call to Invent a Desirable Future for All

Latest News

Launched nearly a year ago, the Civic Pact now brings together more than a hundred organizations, citizens, elected officials, trade unionists, economic players, and many public figures.

pacte_civique.jpg It proposes a new approach to change based on commitment and cooperation to improve the democratic quality in our country, and invites signatories to commit themselves over the long term to build today a more creative, more sustainable, more just and more united society, the only one capable of guaranteeing a desirable future for all.

– Articulate civic and ecological responsibility

The degradation of the environment, the tragic decline of biodiversity, and climate change, known now to be caused by human activity, are major concerns for citizens.

Presidential candidates have seemingly taken a stance: not to speak of the importance of leading the ecological transition and not integrating long-term considerations in governance. However, we know that only a more sustainable society, based notably on local agriculture and economy respectful of nature, can offer a desirable future for the greatest number.

7 themes to challenge candidates in the 2012 elections

The Civic Pact collective challenges the candidates in the 2012 elections around seven cross-cutting themes: Time as a societal issue, Towards an educative society, More justice, Active fraternity, Just and sustainable development, Renewed democracy, A Europe for citizens.

The Civic Pact, a call, an approach, a process

More and more of us are:

• outraged by growing inequalities, corruption, and the reign of finance,

• aware of nature’s limits and the accumulation of individual desires,

• concerned about rising debt, unemployment, exclusion, violence,

• shocked by the degradation of our democracy,

And, at the same time, we are increasingly:

• determined to resist the decay of our societies and the excesses of globalization,

• confident in everyone’s ability to progress and build together,

• determined to find fair balances, both socially and ecologically,

• demanding coherence between what is said and what is done,

• ready to commit and cooperate to live better together.

It is time to react to the crises, drifts, and fractures afflicting our society and democracy, and it’s possible as shown by the various ongoing initiatives. That’s why several civil society organizations and associative activists have adopted a joint platform and proposed a Civic Pact to renew the social contract and improve the quality of democracy.

The Civic Pact is a call to individuals and organizations ready to simultaneously transform themselves and society to invent a desirable future for all.

It is proposed to those adhering to the Civic Pact:

• to adopt certain meaningful behaviors,

• to promote the quality of democracy and social living in their various living environments and within the organizations where they participate,

• to support reforms aimed at putting politics and the economy at the service of people and promoting our openness to Europe and the world.

The Civic Pact relies on a new approach to change and a shared process to be conducted over time.

Prioritize common imperatives

• be creators of meaning,

• be frugal to save resources, live in solidarity and distinguish the essential from the superfluous,

• be fair to ensure respect for fundamental rights for all and the sharing of wealth,

• be brotherly to leave no one behind and mobilize everyone’s capabilities.

Change our individual and collective mindsets

By committing on a personal level, as an actor, and as a citizen which constitute levers for personal and collective transformations.
