Following the retirement of Marie-Thรฉrรจse Pulvรฉnis de Sรฉligny, a call for applications was launched on October 2, 2015, for the position of director of the Matisse Museum in the City of Nice.

A total of 67 applications were submitted. A jury, attended by representatives from the City of Nice and the Ministry of Culture, with the participation of Jean-Jacques Aillagon, former Minister of Culture, selected the application of Claudine Grammont.

According to Philippe Pradal, Mayor of Nice: “Created in 1963 and endowed with a unique collection resulting from the successive donations of the artist’s heirs, the Matisse Museum stands as one of the major centers of cultural influence in our city. The expertise and experience of Claudine Grammont, at the helm of the current team, will help highlight this exceptional collection and reinforce the leading position of the Matisse Museum among top cultural institutions.”

Claudine Grammont has been recognized for several years as one of the specialists on Henri Matisse. Awarded a postdoctoral conservation fellowship from the Mellon Foundation in 2005, she co-authored with Yve-Alain Bois and Karen Butler the catalogue raisonnรฉ of the 59 Matisses at the Barnes Foundation, published by Thames and Hudson in 2016.

With this combined museum and scholarly background, she aims to make the Matisse Museum in Nice a reference point for the artist through a program open to partnerships with major national and international institutions.

Starting in 2018, the Matisse Museum in Nice will participate in the event “Picasso Mรฉditerranรฉe,” with a summer exhibition titled Matisse and Picasso, the Comedy of the Model.
