Cleanliness, drugs: Tiranty Street closed until July 22

Latest News

Since Wednesday, July 16, rue Tiranty has been subject to an access restriction, following the implementation of an ordinance to combat drug addicts. This measure is set to end on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

The primary goal: the peace of the street“, said Anthony Borrรฉ, the first deputy mayor. On Wednesday, July 16, at eight o’clock, the ordinance concerning the closure of rue Emma et Philippe Tiranty was enacted. It will be active until July 22 at eight o’clock and will be “extended if necessary“, explained Anthony Borrรฉ. This is a solution to combat the drug addicts under the influence of products requiring injections, present in the street for several years. The situation had worsened since January 1, 2025, and against which the city hall was combating. For a week, six police officers will be permanently stationed at the two entries of the street to conduct checks. The street will now only be accessible to authorized individuals and those going to stores or medical offices.

The culmination of a three-year struggle

I don’t need to go into detail about the atmosphere on rue Tiranty over the years. The situation has escalated. We had requested this action three years ago, two years ago“, exclaimed Anthony Borrรฉ. A wish granted for the city hall of Nice. During this period, rue Emma et Philippe Tiranty will be subject to an access restriction. An ordinance for reasons of public health and disturbance to public order, caused by the presence of drug addicts. A situation that has become increasingly complex to manage over the past few months.

The first deputy mayor lamented a situation that exceeded reasonable limits. “We recorded 144 reports since the start of 2025, where the municipal police was called. This represents 300% more calls compared to 2024. This is what motivated this ordinance. We also counted 32 specific interventions by cleaning services during the day in 2024, against 43 interventions since 2025, explained Anthony Borrรฉ.

A situation that also started to become concerning for the residents of the street. “It was not easy. I have a ten-year-old daughter, and it was dangerous in the street“, said a mother. Thomas, a student who passes through the street every day to reach avenue Jean Mรฉdecin, was also anxious. “I wasn’t comfortable every time I had to pass through the street. Sometimes people were insistent, and I hurried to cross the street. It was the case on every sidewalk“, he explained.

A fixed and mobile system

Suspending drug-related activity on rue Tiranty, without the phenomenon spreading to the surrounding area. This is the challenge to which the city of Nice will have to provide answers. Conducting actions, in addition to the fixed system on rue Tiranty. “There is that risk. We need to be present in the surroundings to prevent the phenomenon from moving“, stated Anthony Borrรฉ.

Thus, patrols will be set up to assess the situation and observe if it spreads to streets around Jean Mรฉdecin. “There will be a mobile system on the other streets“, emphasized the first deputy mayor.

A call to the State

While the situation on rue Tiranty took time to resolve, it is also a matter of the State, whose inaction was denounced by the mayor of Nice. “Our municipal police have been mobilized here every day of the week for three years, without being able to act against these populations. Drug-using populations fall under the State, the Regional Health Agency. In no case, do they fall under the city, which has tirelessly alerted the authorities to this situation, unbearable for merchants and residents“, explained Anthony Borrรฉ.

A request for State action remains current, despite the ordinance taken for the week. It is now necessary to be able to take other concrete measures regarding this situation, while considering the support for individuals who use drugs. The deputy mayor repeated several times, “We are in favor of treating addicts in the hospital.”

We hope the State will rise to the occasion. I also wish the Regional Health Agency will take notice. We must all unite in this type of situation. Everyone needs to come to the table. Look at what is done or not done. A collective solution is needed because these people must be taken care of. And the city is financially ready to support these initiatives for handling drug addicts“, reiterated Anthony Borrรฉ.
