“I want to express, in the face of this dreadful tragedy, all my compassion for the families and my solidarity with the Italian authorities and the city of Genoa,” reacted Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, on Tuesday, August 14th on franceinfo, as the collapse of a highway bridge in Genoa (Italy) resulted in at least 22 deaths.

The mayor of Nice announced the dispatch of technical support to Italy. As early as this Tuesday afternoon, construction and maintenance vehicles, backhoe loaders, and personnel from the Nice metropolitan area will head to Genoa. They must “be operational tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest at the scene of this tragedy.”

A crisis unit is also assembled in Nice, with the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, to manage the impact of this bridge collapse on the department’s road networks. “This will cause traffic management issues on the A8 highway at the junction with Italy.”

Furthermore, the hospital services of the Nice metropolitan area are also mobilized. As president of the board of the CHU of Nice, Christian Estrosi announced that many beds will be made available to Italian authorities should the high number of injuries require it. The goal is “to be able to welcome them with dignity and give them the best care possible.”
