Conference: Gérard Bekerman Wants to Reconcile the People of Nice with Taxes Tonight

Latest News

President of Afer, Gérard Bekerman will be in Nice this Thursday, May 22, for a public conference. The economist wishes to bring taxes back to the heart of the social contract and to advocate for better-protected savings.

This Thursday, May 22 at 6 PM, Gérard Bekerman will speak at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice. This event, organized by the French Association of Savings and Retirement (Afer), is open to all citizens. Admission is free. The theme: the future of savings and taxation in an uncertain economic context.

As the head of France’s leading savers’ association, Gérard Bekerman warns: taxes are increasingly perceived as unfair and opaque. He calls for a renewal of the relationship between the State and its citizens. “We cannot build a peaceful society with taxes perceived as a punishment. We must find a fair, understood, and accepted tax, not one that is endured. It must finance the essentials: health, education, ecology, defense, culture.”

The conference aims to offer insights into a subject often deemed complex. It will also address current challenges: savings taxation, the future of pensions, and wealth transfer.

A career spanning finance, education, and culture

Gérard Bekerman has chaired the Afer since 2007. He has been a member of the association since 1987 and became an administrator in 2005. A university professor, he has taught in the United States, at the University of Paris 2, and at ESSEC, where he currently heads a finance chair.

He also founded a piano competition for amateur musicians worldwide in 1989, which he continues to preside over. He is active in several cultural foundations.

With this conference, he hopes to foster debate on the role of taxes in our society and on how citizens can regain trust in public institutions.
