This Friday, May 12 at 8 p.m. at the MAMAC auditorium, the Marine World Discovery Center is offering the conference “Is the Mediterranean in Danger?” followed by the screening of the film “Mediterranean, the Great Drain” by Eric Bauducel.
How is the Mediterranean doing? What is the current state of the Mediterranean? Can we still take action to mitigate its threats? What solutions exist to preserve Mare Nostrum?
Paolo Guidetti (University Professor, Director of the ECOMERS laboratory, University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis), Isabelle Monville (Natura 2000 Cap-Martin Project Manager, CARF), and Richard Chelmla (President of the Marine World Discovery Center) will answer these questions.
The Mediterranean represents 0.7% of the ocean’s surface while housing nearly 18% of the world’s marine biodiversity. Biologists estimate that nearly 60% of the species are specific to this region and 20% are threatened with rapid extinction.
With 23 bordering states and nearly 500 million inhabitants, the Mediterranean basin, which is almost enclosed, is a maritime space that is threatened and even endangered due to significant economic development in recent years. Within the context of sustainable management of the Mediterranean environment and habitats, the protection of the species they harbor is an essential priority.
