The association Liberté Chérie Nice, in partnership with the A.C.L. association and Contribuables Associés, is organizing a conference-debate with Benoîte TAFFIN and Yvon BLOT on the theme “Giving the People a Voice to Overcome the Crisis through Direct Democracy”: on Friday, February 10, 2012, at 6:00 PM – Salle Roger Ferrière in Saint Laurent-du-Var (on the Esplanade du Levant, near the town hall).
A few months before the elections, this conference, organized with the support of the municipality of Saint-Laurent-du-Var, will allow for a better understanding of Direct Democracy: “Little known in France, direct democracy is implemented in several foreign countries, including Switzerland, Germany, and the United States, for over a century. Closely aligned with the ideal of direct public involvement in political decisions, popular initiatives allow citizens to propose laws that are then voted on by all voters. In Switzerland, federal authorities can also propose a counter-project, and voters can choose to vote for one or the other of the projects or for or against both projects.”
This conference will be given by Benoîte Taffin and Yvan Blot.
Former Mayor of the 2nd Arrondissement of Paris (UDF-RPR) from 1989 to 2001, Benoîte Taffin is also the spokesperson for “Contribuables Associés,” France’s leading taxpayer association with 146,000 members, advocating for reduced taxes and public spending.
Yvan Blot, with a doctorate in economic sciences, is a former student of the ENA, a senior civil servant, former deputy of Pas-de-Calais (UDF-RPR), and author of the books “Les Racines de la Liberté,” Albin Michel (1985), “La Démocratie Confisquée,” Jean Picollec (1988), and “Herbert Spencer, un évolutionniste contre l’étatisme,” Les Belles Lettres, awarded the Liberal Book Prize 2007.
