A year after the release of the book Sport&Cinema by Julien and Gérard Camy, published by the Nice-based Bailli de Suffren, the city of Nice invites you to the conference “Sport in Cinema, a Mirror of Emancipation” organized by the Friends of Liberty at the Maison des Associations Nice Garibaldi.

The adventure of the book, its critical success, and the encounters it has inspired will also be discussed.

Modern sports began to be regulated at the dawn of the 20th century and became a globally popular spectacle, much like cinema, which emerged around the same time. While the 7th art recounts the world between fantasy and reality, sports endure the events of a dramatic and emancipatory century.

Thus, from Buster Keaton to Clint Eastwood, from Jean-Jacques Annaud to Emir Kusturica, cinema draws inspiration from sports, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of a sporting ethic that often dares to defy prohibitions and contributes to the evolution of the world, if not precedes it…

This book, the result of research, editing, and graphic work, carried out in Nice, was awarded the 2016 Film Criticism Prize at the Cinémathèque Française.
