This conference is part of the cycle “From the States of Savoy to Italian Unity,” organized under the initiative of Jean-Marc Giaume, Municipal Councillor, Community Councillor.
This conference traces the daily history of the Nice nobility between two significant dates, 1814 and 1860, that is, from the return of King Victor-Emmanuel I to his domains after the Revolution and Empire, to the cession of Nice to France, a decisive moment in the process of Italian unification.
A presentation of the noble city palaces, the villas in the countryside of Nice and its county, testimonies of the “noble living” of the 19th century, education received, political ideas, and employment in the judiciary or the Sardinian army will be discussed.
A section will be dedicated to marriage, the role of women, the importance of the extended family, and alliances with the Piedmontese aristocracy, another key element in the sense of national belonging.
Finally, a look at the dilemma of 1860 and the choices made by various members of the Nice elite.
