Contemporary art in Nice from the Moma to Castel Plage via Motus

Latest News

For the fourth consecutive year, BOTOX[s], an association of venues dedicated to contemporary art in Nice, is organizing an art night featuring a route that will begin on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 3 PM and will end with music from 10 PM at Castel Plage. Interview with Valérie Arboireau, the head of mOma.

Nice Premium: Valérie, another artistic Saturday in perspective?

Valérie Arboireau: Yes, for the third consecutive year, mOma is invited to this contemporary art tour across the city. It is an opportunity for us to be part of the Nice network, especially since we have been working in France and abroad for nearly 15 years!

NP: What will be the promising artistic route for this Nice weekend start?

VA: I would suggest starting from the northern district and following the tram. Attend a talk by Peter Larsen about colors, touch wood in the garden, visit the (future) Motus gallery on Saleya, and end at Chez Ali at Castel, passing by the Marine Gallery! Am I missing anything?

NP: On the Moma side, color and wood on the agenda, right?

Peter Larsen will open his studio and talk about color in all its forms, taking the opportunity to hold his annual sale of prototypes, trials, and returns from exhibitions.

As for me, I will offer an eco-reflection around the Ficus carica, and work on superstition and other beliefs and lack of self-confidence… You can treat yourself with “touch wood” items themed around Love, Glory, and Beauty.

Then at Jacky Ananou’s place and finally in Ali’s realm at Castel Plage?

I have just partnered with Ananou, a portrait painter, to create a new space on Cours Saleya: the Motus gallery. Initially, to present our work permanently, as well as exclusive fashion brands in Nice, gather a sharp selection of French and international contemporary creators and artists, and organize thematic events.

We are starting with a pre-opening this Saturday with a retrospective of 30 years of Ananou’s paintings. The official opening will coincide with the Nice Jazz Festival… we will come back to it in due time!

NP: Finally, what do you hope for from this day, and what are Valérie’s plans for the coming months?

VA: This day will be an opportunity to meet new faces, talk about Art without disconnecting from the public, to experiment with new ideas, and to present this future gallery-boutique…

My short-term projects include a styling mission for a Christmas catalog, a visit to the Art Basel contemporary art fair in Switzerland, and especially the establishment of the Motus gallery that will allow me to present all the projects piled up in my little head… a beautiful meeting, a beautiful story to tell!

THE PROGRAM

THE MOMA

Visit of PETER LARSEN’s studio.

Presentation of his latest work with an introduction to the contrasts of color.

Peter Larsen was born in Denmark in 1957, and he is a graduate in bookbinding from the graphic arts school in Copenhagen. Since 1986 he has lived and worked in Nice.

His work is positioned in concrete art and presents as a coded writing of reality.

The rhythm of the bands in his works follows a mathematical sequence, and the choice of colors is aesthetic.

Visiting his studio is a rare encounter with the backdrop of his setting.

The discourse there is unusual, different from that of an art critic.

It’s like going into a chef’s kitchen, facing the source of creation, in a concrete ambiance.

Land Art in the garden by VALERIE ARBOIREAU.

The mOma garden is a closed and shaded city garden. The plants come from various salvages in gardens in distress.

Only the palm tree, orange tree, and fig tree are original.

Valérie Arboireau reconnects with her first horticultural loves (high school diploma D) and will propose an artistic eco-superstition around the Ficus carica.

Intervention by Peter Larsen at 4 PM, 6 PM, and 8 PM

GALERIE MOTUS

ANANOU’s retroSPECTive

1980-2010

Pre-opening of the future MOTUS gallery.

The location will be undergoing transformation and will officially open in July 2011.

An opportunity for Ananou to take over the space and show a glimpse of his painting career.

Ananou lives and works in Nice.

From abstract to figurative, from Orientalism to the world of jazz, each period is a constant questioning, with a preference for pure drawing, the detail that touches, this art of revealing what is hidden.

Ananou’s work is a duality between his need for solitude and intimate enclosure and his love for encounters. His latest works have been created in association with Jazz photographers.
