Born in 2012 in Nice from the union of a group of friends sharing the same passion, the choir Coràson – Chamber Choir now consists of more than 50 choristers from different parts of the world and develops an atypical repertoire, utilizing unique musical elements.
Traveling the world, identifying with it, studying our similarities and differences through a multitude of songs, from the past to today, from China to Serbia, from South Africa to Mexico, from the Americas to Armenia, is the challenge that Coràson has set for itself.
An extraordinary choir that perfectly embodies the journey and mindset of its choirmaster, Sarmad Khoury. Syrian, born in Homs about thirty years ago, he decided to leave his country in 2010 to further his studies in his passion, music, which he found to be insufficiently studied and taught by local actors. (He studied musicology and piano at the Higher Institute of Music and Dramatic Art in Damascus from 2005 to 2010.)
Sarmad obtained a research Master’s degree in musicology in 2012, and since September of the same year, with the founding members of Coràson, he has fully contributed to the growth of this new experience. His extensive knowledge of the musical universe of the 20th century particularly inspired him in this direction, and then in the search for new sounds to bring an original identity to this music.
“Comprehending the gesture and musical intuition”
Currently, the group consists of about fifty choristers. They hail from France, Italy, England, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, the United States, Iraq, or even Syria, invested in the project to involve the choir as an art form that is part of everyday life, dynamic and polyglot for the most part, they are mostly not musicians. Thus, Coràson – Chamber Choir also plays the role of teacher, but a tolerant and open teacher, as evidenced by its work motto:
“Comprehending the gesture and musical intuition and studying the vocal expression techniques unique to different styles are our paths to learning”
To celebrate the “End of the Year of Coràson,” a grand concert is organized this Saturday, June 13, at the Théâtre de la Cité, in Nice, with the presence of actress Fadia Stella.
A perfect opportunity to discover or rediscover this choir, as touching musically as it is humanly.
