Coronavirus: 16,642 new cases and 141 deaths in 24 hours

The fight against the Covid-19 epidemic is intensifying. In the rest of the world, Germany has surpassed two million cases and has almost 45,000 deaths. Here’s the latest on Covidโ€ฆ


According to Public Health France, 16,642 new cases and 141 deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 2,910,989 cases and 70,238 deaths, including 48,924 in hospitals.

Regarding vaccination, 422,127 people have been vaccinated in France to date, according to the latest figures announced by the Ministry of Health. 413,046 received an injection the day before.

In the PACA region, the vaccination campaign initially focused on individuals residing in collective housing, particularly in nursing homes. The vaccination of these residents continues. To date, more than 21,000 people have been vaccinated. Nearly 80 vaccination centers are already open to liberal professionals or employees over 50 or those with risk factors.

Starting Monday, Covid-19 vaccination will be offered to people over 75 years old living at home, as well as to “high-risk” individuals, regardless of age.

As of Monday, January 18, 2021, those eligible for vaccination are:

โ€“Residents in nursing homes and long-term care units, who are vaccinated directly in the establishments

  • Seniors living in autonomous residences, service residences, and other specialized living facilities, as well as in migrant worker hostels
  • People over 75 years old

  • Vulnerable disabled individuals residing in specialized care homes and medicalized care hostels

  • Healthcare professionals, including liberal professionals, home aides assisting vulnerable elderly and disabled individuals, and firefighters, when they are over 50 and/or have comorbidities.

  • Individuals with a condition that exposes them to a very high risk of Covid-19, with a medical prescription for priority vaccination.

In this last category, the concerned individuals are those:

โ€“suffering from cancer and malignant hematological diseases undergoing chemotherapy

  • suffering from severe chronic kidney diseases, including dialysis patients;
    having undergone solid organ transplants

  • having undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants
    suffering from chronic multi-pathologies, with at least two organ failures

  • suffering from certain rare diseases (see list on the Ministry of Health’s website)

  • suffering from Down syndrome.
