Coronavirus: the 2021 Nice Carnival postponed to 2022

Latest News

The question was on everyone’s lips and the concern of the carnival enthusiasts was increasingly palpable. Well, the verdict came down like a guillotine: there will be no carnival in 2021 in Nice.

On Tuesday, Christian Estrosi had a videoconference meeting with the carnival enthusiasts. On this occasion, they discussed numerous concerns regarding the economic situation of their activity in the event of a possible postponement. So, no cancellation since the work undertaken since the first quarter of the year is already very significant and would represent a too significant dry loss for the carnival enthusiasts.

The Nice Carnival represents between 50 and 60% of its annual turnover; this cancellation results in a loss of income for the Nice carnival enthusiasts. โ€œI need to support the Nice carnival enthusiasts, to give a future to the Nice carnival […] The order for 2022 will be placed with a deposit paid from the beginning of February so that they can economically get through this period. We will include them in a number of events, for the May Festival, a summer for Nice…โ€ assures the mayor of Nice.

This international event, which generates 30 million euros in economic benefits, is one of the carnivals that attract the most spectators, along with those in Rio, Brazil, and Venice. A situation that does not seem to overly worry Christian Estrosi: โ€œI think that if the lockdown easing goes according to the schedule set by the Government, we will have a year 2021, on which we are working, with a very attractive program that should make Nice and its Metropolis probably one of the most attractive territories.โ€

This is not the first time the carnival has been canceled: it had already happened during the two world wars and the first Gulf War, as Nice historian Alex Benvenuto recalls.

See you in February 2022 to discover the โ€œKing of Animals.โ€
