COVID-19: Christian Estrosi promises a “weekend lockdown” if the number of cases does not decrease in Nice

Latest News

During a video conference this afternoon, Christian Estrosi announced that he is considering reinstating a weekend lockdown in addition to various other measures that are already more or less known.

“After eight days of curfew, (next Monday) if the incidence rate still exceeds 150 per 100,000 inhabitants, I will decide to implement an economic lockdown,” announced the mayor of Nice in the middle of the afternoon, surrounded by Richard Chelma, deputy delegate for health. Based on the recommendations of the general practitioners’ order and the union of physicians in the PACA region, Christian Estrosi says he is ready to “implement a weekend lockdown.”

Some non-essential businesses could also see their doors closed by the application of the decree of October 16, 2020, article 50, in agreement with the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes. This decree stipulates that the Prefect is authorized to prohibit or regulate the reception of the public in establishments open to the public.

At the same time, the mayor of Nice specified that half of the staff of the city and the Metropolis would switch back to teleworking from tomorrow, as was the case during the lockdown. He took the opportunity to encourage various companies and institutions to do the same. A closure of universities is also under consideration with a possible implementation next week since a letter has already been sent to the rector to this effect. This would lead to the implementation of courses exclusively online for all students.

Protecting the Health System

Cultural and sports venues could also be forced to close for still undetermined durations. Activities in markets would also see the implementation of new barrier measures.
I will ensure that the state’s restrictions are scrupulously respected. I will not let our health system explode. We will reopen hotel spaces to accommodate COVID-19 patients and allow them to be in isolation as we did last March,” specifies the mayor. “Each person holds our collective responsibility in their hands through their individual behavior. I appeal to everyone’s responsibility because, otherwise, I will be forced to take additional measures.”

“Looking at the virus curve rising here and around us, I fear a second wave more worrying than the first one we experienced, and you know I am not the only one saying it today.”

It remains important to remind everyone of the importance of respecting barrier gestures, whether in a professional or private setting. With the approach of the holiday season, it is still possible to reverse the trend to enjoy a good time with family!
