This Sunday, 5,838 Covid patients were in intensive care, compared to 5,769 on Saturday, an increase of 69 within 24 hours (and 497 over a week). 286 new patients were admitted this Sunday, 16 more than on Saturday. This indicator, which had not been this high since April 18, 2020, is expected to rise further in the coming days, according to the DGS.
Currently, the capacity of intensive care units in French hospitals has been increased to 8,000 beds for all conditions combined.
The number of hospitalized Covid patients is also on the rise: 30,671 this Sunday (+433 in 24 hours). 1,305 patients were admitted to the hospital (+81 compared to Saturday). This figure is close to the peaks of the first (32,000) and the second wave of the epidemic in the fall.
However, the daily number of deaths in hospitals has slightly decreased to 178 on Sunday (-7 compared to Saturday). Since the start of the epidemic, 72,226 people have died in hospitals. France is approaching the threshold of 100,000 deaths (nearly 99,000 this Sunday) when including deaths in nursing homes.
The number of new infections in the last 24 hours is also down to 34,895 (compared to 43,284 on Saturday).
Since the start of the vaccination campaign, more than 10.8 million people have received an injection (20.6% of the adult population), including 3.7 million who have been fully vaccinated with two injections (7.1% of the adult population).
Vaccination will be open starting this Monday to all French people aged 55 and over.
