Covid-19: The epidemic is surging again in the Alpes-Maritimes under the threat of the Omicron variant

Latest News

The incidence rate is once again rising alarmingly in the Alpes-Maritimes, with daily records being set for a week. The number of hospitalized patients is also increasing. A bad sign as the Omicron wave has not yet begun.

In France, a new record for contamination was set this Thursday, December 23, with 84,272 positive cases detected in 24 hours.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, the numbers are also skyrocketing with 920 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 76 patients placed in intensive care, and 363 people in regular hospitalization.

“A tension that unfortunately leads to the deprogramming of non-urgent medical and surgical procedures,” commented Romain Alexandre, head of the departmental ARS.

The only consolation for health authorities is the number of vaccinated individuals: 88,000 last week, including 400 first-time vaccinations over the past weekend. The situation remains tense, especially with the arrival of the very contagious new Omicron variant… but we cannot yet assess its impact as we lack perspective.

Although the Alpes-Maritimes are not yet besieged by positive Omicron variant cases, the Regional Health Agency has nonetheless confirmed the discovery of a first case. “It involves a patient hospitalized at the Nice University Hospital,” specified Michรจle Guez, deputy director of the departmental delegation of the ARS.
