This Sunday, critical care services (which include intensive care, high dependency care, and continuous monitoring) were caring for 4,971 patients. This indicator, closely monitored by health authorities, is slowly moving away from the threshold of 6,000 patients exceeded on April 26, and from the alarming peak of the first wave in spring 2020 (around 7,000 patients). In 24 hours, 124 new patients with severe forms of Covid were admitted to critical care services.
This downward trend is also observed in overall hospitalizations, with a total of Covid patients amounting to 25,797, compared to 25,800 on Saturday. Over 24 hours, 527 patients were admitted to hospitals, compared to 844 the previous day.
In total, 106,422 people have died from Covid-19 since the beginning of the epidemic, the vast majority being elderly and more vulnerable.
While the government’s goal of 30 million French people vaccinated by mid-June remains uncertain, the milestone of 20 million people having received at least one injection by mid-May (compared to more than 17.6 million currently) is expected to be reached “on May 17.”
