As expected, the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, Bernard Gonzalez, held a new press conference this morning in the presence of the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, to announce new restrictions related to the resurgence of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Several strong measures were announced this morning, indicating the concern of state services about the situation in France’s 5th largest city. Among them, the ban on gatherings of more than 10 people in outdoor public places such as parks, gardens, beaches, or the townโs quays will now be enforced. Bars/restaurants will now have to close from 12:30 AM to 6 AM, while take-out sales and public consumption of alcohol will be banned from 8 PM. Playing music will also be prohibited in public areas to prevent nighttime gatherings.
Regarding large gatherings that were limited to 5,000 people, the limit has been reduced to only 1,000 participants. This measure will impact the presence of gym supporters for the OGCN vs PSG match scheduled for this Sunday at 1 PM.
The Prefect also stated, “This afternoon, I will meet with parliamentarians, the president of the departmental council, inter-community presidents, and mayors to discuss with them the extension of certain measures to the entire department.” At the same time, Bernard Gonzalez invites “all citizens to show civility and responsibility regarding private spaces as well”, referring to family gatherings that are currently an important vector for virus transmission.
Christian Estrosi then took the floor to confirm the measures announced last week, namely his decision to close locker rooms in sports venues, the obligation to wear a mask in theaters, and to encourage remote working.
As a reminder, the city of Nice offers all residents the possibility of receiving two washable protective masks at their home: more information here
