Death of Anita Garibaldi, great-granddaughter of Giuseppe Garibaldi

The name of Garibaldi will always be associated with the city of Nice, the place of his birth, even though the “hero of two worlds” sailed away in his adolescence, later having a complex relationship with the city, especially at the time of the annexation of Nice to France in 1860.

Among his many descendants, who were not always in agreement with one another, Mrs. Anita Garibaldi, great-granddaughter of Giuseppe Garibaldi, was the one who maintained the most strict relationship with Nice. As the president of the “Garibaldi Foundation,” she sought to unite the Garibaldians worldwide. She has just passed away.

Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, wanted to remember her in a statement: “Among the numerous descendants of our hero, Anita Garibaldi was the most loyal to Nice, which she honored with her presence on several occasions. Together, we ensured to preserve and perpetuate the memory of her glorious ancestors whose struggles for the Republic and freedom are still relevant today. On July 4, 2013, the anniversary of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s birth in 1807 in the port district, the City of Nice made Anita Garibaldi an honorary citizen, a title I had the chance to bestow upon her myself. That is why today, I am torn between the emotion of having lost her and the pride of having known her.”
