When she needs to “recharche her batteries,” she goes for a “walk in the forest” and then starts to “read a few pages from great philosophical or religious authors.” The “Confessions” of Saint Augustine are among her recent readings, particularly the episode of the “vision of Ostia,” a moment when the future Bishop of Hippo and his dying mother experience a mystical moment of spiritual elevation at the window of their home. “Charity must remain discreet,” explains the singer in front of journalists and a few music lovers gathered for the occasion. “But it must also have witnesses”: “the voice is the main means of bearing this witness.” Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni, “intellectual singer,” “artist of solidarity,” truly deserves her nicknames.
After a presentation of the Association by Christian Jarniat, vice-President for Nice, alongside Hervรฉ Casini, musicologist lecturer, the founding president of Ab Harmoniae Onlus Italy-France-Monaco recalled in her own way and with much emotion, sometimes barely contained, the different facets of her commitment. “Bearing witness to the sacrifices of a composer’s entire life is worth a year’s effort to work and make his work known, sometimes unknown to the general public,” she emphasized to justify her desire to “highlight” pieces unduly relegated to musical archives. This press conference was thus an opportunity to announce the release of the recording, on Digital, of “Marie-Magdeleine,” the first of the three Oratorios by Jules Massenet. Last June, she masterfully performed “Eve” at the Cathedral of Monaco (https://www.nicepremium.fr/article/denia-mazzola-gavazzeni-eve-passionnee-a-la-cathedrale-de-monaco.5794.html).
Regarding the charitable aspect of her work, the soprano is even more emphatic: “it’s not about giving a check” but about “accompanying with personal notes of love those excluded from our society.” While “highlighting,” she adds, “young talents who have already started their careers and who also have the right to have witnesses.” Recounting during her presentation, touching anecdotes about the reception she received during her performances, she insisted on the idea that “talent is a gift from heaven that must be shared with others.” In her conclusion, Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni paid a heartfelt tribute to Maria Callas: “she was able to pour out her tears and sorrow through her voice and an actress’s attitude, which also bear witness to the sufferings of a human being.”
