After leaving his position as director at the Nice-Matin group, journalist Denis Carreaux is launching a new project by exploring the podcast format, supported by a Nice-based production company.

Denis Carreaux held a press conference in a restricted committee to introduce his new podcast titled “Heads or Tails” on Thursday, June 18, in the studios of Recordia, subsidiary of the production company Greenbull Média, located on the Promenade des Anglais. Conducted in partnership with the Nice-based company, the journalist’s project is part of a renewal initiative following his contested departure from the editorial management of the Nice-Matin group in October 2025.

Reworking interview formats

The concept of the “Heads or Tails” podcast is simple: the guest flips a coin four times, with each side corresponding to two “diametrically opposed” questions according to the journalist. Depending on which side the coin lands on, the question asked to the guest differs. Denis Carreaux wished to rework the traditional interview format and make it more playful. He aims to “bring together two worlds: on one hand journalism, on the other the codes of new media (…) to create a new playground”.

The target audience for this new program seems quite broad: “The ambition of the format is to address a curious public, interested in in-depth interviews, life journeys (…) compelling stories and personalities who have something to share. The core target naturally sits among audiences already very present on YouTube and social networks, notably young adults and working professionals, but the format is intended to reach far beyond” clarifies the Greenbull Média group. The 20-30 age group, today the furthest removed from traditional media, is also being targeted.

Strong local anchoring

By being entirely filmed and produced in Nice, “Heads or Tails” intends to contribute to the city’s revitalization and make it a privileged meeting space: “This territorial implantation which we value and defend is an asset for raising awareness about Nice, the region, and for attracting top-tier guests” assures Denis Carreaux. Conversely, the project aims to benefit from the influence of the Côte d’Azur and the strategic positioning of the studios, close to Nice airport (France’s third airport in terms of passenger flow in 2025, editor’s note), to attract its guests.

The selection of guests for “Heads or Tails” follows specific criteria. Denis Carreaux wishes to spotlight “personalities, local or not, who have national prominence”. Among the first guests are filmmakers Eric Fraticelli (Permission to Destroy) and Fabien Ottoniente (Camping), and lesser-known profiles with genuine stories to tell.

52 minutes per day on YouTube on average

While our screens are “saturated by social media content and short formats”, according to Axel Hutin, co-founder of Greenbull Média, the promise of the “Heads or Tails” podcast is to deliver quality content, offering greater depth. Facing the general trend of audiences shifting from traditional media to social networks — particularly YouTube — Denis Carreaux and Axel Hutin saw the idea of a podcast that revisits journalism codes emerge a few months ago.

So the bet is to propose a way of viewing YouTube comparable to a “TV program schedule”, according to Axel Hutin. By capitalizing on the time spent on the platform by its users (a French person would spend an average of 52 minutes per day on it in 2025), the podcast aims to capture an audience flow formerly acquired by traditional media, now directed toward social networks. A strategy deployed by many media outlets, such as the France Télévisions group, which recently reorganized to offer its programs in streaming on YouTube.

Renewal post Nice-Matin

Following 35 years of career in key positions at major press outlets such as Le Parisien and Nice-Matin, Denis Carreaux made headlines by leaving the editorial office of the major southeastern newspaper in October 2025.

After more than eight months of iterations as a freelancer, the journalist arrived at the Recordia studios with a conviction: that “journalism has every place on new platforms”. A vision in line with the times and aligned with developments in information formats.

The next episode of the “Heads or Tails” podcast will be released on Wednesday, July 1st on the YouTube channel @PileouFaceMedia.
