Departmental: waiting for the second round for a “bis repetita” of Charles-Ange Ginésy

Latest News

With the final results of the first round known, the forecast for the second round, which will concern 25 of the 27 cantons (two have already elected Eric Ciotti and David Lisnard and their running mates), presents a static situation: except for the two left enclaves supporting socialist Marie-Louise Gourdon in Mouans-Sartoux and communist Francis Tujague in Contes, we will witness duels between candidates from the Union of the Right (LR+UDI) and those from the National Rally.

Except for two cantons (Cagnes 1 and Menton) where the situation is uncertain, candidates from the right-wing party are ahead of those on the far-right list and are naturally the favorites for the election in the second round. In the nine cantons of Nice, not a single one sees the UD lists leading.

In sporting terms, the match is over. It only remains to wait for next Sunday’s results to see if the RN will manage to make its way into the departmental council.

The Departmental Council will therefore remain a “citadel” of the right, as is currently the case where it enjoys a very large majority, with 50 out of 54 councilors.

The outgoing President Charles-Ange Ginésy will be reappointed, with Eric Ciotti by his side, the brief president of the Finance Commission, also known as “the boss,” then a few powerhouses who make their point and serve the interests of their territories, and finally, the frontline troops, lined up and following orders.

Some dissent could arise from the minority group of metropolitan elected officials loyal to Christian Estrosi. But, as in the past, the two groups will prefer an “armed peace” to a “declared war,” which would be advantageous neither for one nor for the other.

The oppositions will be entitled to what is technically called the “right to speak,” meaning the right to speak while knowing they will not be listened to. They will negotiate a few small advantages and then… that’s it.

Should we remind that representative democracy is the law of the majority?
