The new prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, Jean-Marie Girier, has decided to prohibit the performance of the show “Dieudonné – The Thread of Ariadne” scheduled for this Sunday, August 16 in Nice. No specific venue had been communicated for this performance. The decision concerns the entire department.
The prefecture cites a serious risk of public disorder and a high probability of criminal offenses being committed. The statement also recalls that performances by Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala have sometimes been organized despite prefectural bans.
According to the prefecture, antisemitic, racist, offensive, hateful, conspiracy-related, homophobic and transphobic remarks or gestures are regularly made during these shows. The statement also mentions comments justifying terrorism as well as discrimination, persecution and extermination perpetrated during World War II.
The prefecture also recalls several criminal convictions against Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala, some of which are final, for remarks of an antisemitic nature, inciting racial hatred and damaging to human dignity.
A previous performance already banned in January
A performance had already been banned in the Alpes-Maritimes by prefectural order on January 16, 2026. Despite this ban, the performance went ahead. The intervention of law enforcement was then necessary to end the show and issue tickets to offenders.
In 2023, Christian Estrosi had already wished that, “this kind of discourse and characters will never have a place in our city” when the comedian was supposed to perform as part of his show “Foutu pour Foutu.”
For the performance scheduled for Sunday, August 16, Jean-Marie Girier is requesting enhanced vigilance from security forces across the territory. Any attempt to maintain or organize the performance will be immediately stopped.
Each participant will also be issued a ticket, the prefecture specifies. As a reminder, in France, the fine for organizing or holding an illegal performance (without an entertainment business license, undeclared or unauthorized) amounts to a maximum of €1,500 for an individual and €7,500 for a legal entity.
