The French Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi, 25, passed away Friday night at the University Hospital of Nice, his family announced this Saturday, July 18, in a statement.

A victim of a terrible accident while driving his Marussia in Suzuka (Japan) on October 5, 2014, he had been in a coma since then. “Jules fought to the very end, as he always did, but yesterday, his battle came to an end. We are experiencing an immense and indescribable pain,” his family wrote in the statement.

He is the first F1 driver to die as a result of a racing accident since the Brazilian triple world champion Ayrton Senna, on May 1, 1994.
