Discovering the Geological Heritage of Mercantour National Park

Latest News

A dream of an awakened walker. This Friday, December 21st at 6:30 PM, the Maison de l’Environnement of the City of Nice invites the public to discover the geological heritage of the Mercantour National Park. Presented by Patrice Tordjman, a Ranger of the Mercantour National Park, this conference will take the listener to climb heights to reach the splendors of nature.

With its peaks over 3,000 meters in altitude, its multiple glacial lakes, and its six valleys with very distinct character, the Mercantour National Park is a unique jewel of preserved nature, just an hour from the sea.

A complex blend of Mediterranean and Alpine influences contributes to the originality and variety of its landscapes, natural environments, fauna, and flora. The Mercantour massif is the last promontory of the Alpine arc, just before it plunges into the Mediterranean Sea.

Exploring the Mercantour guarantees constant awe: at every turn of a path, a new astonishing spectacle filled with impressions, sensations, and varied landscapes. How can one unravel this natural mystery?

Combining many sciences is required to find elements of an answer: the very varied geological formations have been shaped by the Alpine uplift, then carved and eroded by waters into narrow and deep gorges. From the granite of Argentera to the high-altitude karsts of Crousette and Marguareis, passing through the red gorges of Daluis or the famous Valley of Wonders, the audience of this conference will go from discoveries to amazement, in ever more splendid landscapes.
