From June 14 to September 1, 2024, the Palais Lascaris hosts the exhibition “Domani” by Jacques Martinez, offering an experience where the baroque decor of the palace blends with the contemporary works of the artist.
Located in the heart of Nice’s old town, the Palais Lascaris is the most remarkable baroque monument in Nice. Built in the mid-17th century for the Lascaris-Vintimille family, it is distinguished by its monumental staircase adorned with frescoes and richly decorated salons. Acquired by the city of Nice in 1942 and classified as a historical monument in 1946, the Palais Lascaris is today labeled as a Museum of France.
The Palais Lascaris presents nine works by Jacques Martinez from June 14 to September 1. Among them are bronze sculptures from private collections, the artist himself, as well as from the MAMAC (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) taking center stage. The work Merenda’s Virgin Boogie, lent by the MAMAC, is particularly noteworthy. Similarly, this exhibition unfolds in the Grand Salon, the antechamber of the noble floor, as well as the old pharmacy, allowing for a fascinating juxtaposition between the old and the modern.
Born in El-Biar, near Algiers, Jacques Martinez divides his life between Ticino in Switzerland and his studio in Saint-Paul de Vence. Associated with the School of Nice at the beginning of his career, he also created the fresco in the courthouse of Grasse from 1997 to 1999.
