The city of Nice, like seventeen other municipalities in the Alpes-Maritimes, has been classified as a natural disaster area following the severe drought episode that struck France last spring and summer.
In response to the situation of exceptional drought that affected mainland France last year, the city of Nice requested the classification as a natural disaster from state services. This decision was motivated by the reception of โa certain number of reportsโ at the town hall.
Indeed, “many residents of Nice” complained about damages at their homes. These could take the form of cracks or doors that no longer open or open very poorly as a result of this phenomenon.
Nice Obtains Natural Disaster Classification
On September 8th, the state recognized Nice among the municipalities affected by a natural disaster from April 1 to September 30, 2022. This recognition was granted on the basis of a natural phenomenon characterized by โdifferential ground movements due to drought and soil rehydrationโ.
The ministerial decree published in the Official Journal specifies that such a decision is motivated by โthe abnormal intensity of the phenomenon analyzed with respect to geotechnical and meteorological dataโ.
This classification allows the affected residents of Nice to benefit from the natural disaster compensation scheme. The city of Nice informs residents who wish to do so that they have until October 8, 2023 to submit an estimated statement of losses to their insurance company.
