Latest News

As Morocco endures dark hours 48 hours after the terrible earthquake that struck the country, associations in Nice are actively working to provide assistance.

This afternoon from 5 PM to 7 PM, the Secours Populaire will be present at Place Masséna to collect financial donations. On their website, the association states that they are “able to act quickly” thanks to their euro-Mediterranean network for solidarity and their partners. They add that “€50,000 has been released from the emergency fund to assist children and families who have lost everything” and that “support for the most vulnerable people will be ongoing”, and also that “reconstruction projects are underway”.

On site, the latest figures reveal nearly 2,500 dead and 2,421 injured. Additionally, 530 schools and 55 boarding schools have been damaged by the earthquake between Chichaoua and Taroudant. To recap, Morocco was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake is located southwest of Marrakech.

General Mobilization for Morocco

Since Saturday, local authorities have been mobilizing to support the Moroccan people. Thus, the Alpes-Maritimes department has already announced that it will vote to grant aid of €50,000 during its plenary assembly on October 6th “to provide an emergency response to the most affected populations”, stated Charles Ange Ginésy in a press release.

Furthermore, a space will be made available in the coming hours by the department for the benefit of the association Maison du Maroc 06. Located at 69 Boulevard de la Madeleine in Nice, this 300m2 space will allow the association to store donations collected during various drives organized by the association.

Meanwhile, the Région Sud along with Occitanie and the Corsica community have announced the release of an exceptional aid package of one million euros. “In the short term, we are available to intervene together for emergency humanitarian aid,” explained Renaud Muselier. “This financial commitment will concern the upcoming reconstruction efforts both in urban and agricultural areas.”
