EDF will no longer cut off electricity in case of unpaid bills.

The electricity provider announced this morning the cessation of power cuts for individuals in case of unpaid bills. Here is what will replace this sanction.

To replace power cuts in case of an unpaid bill, EDF will implement a reduction in power starting April 1, 2022. This measure was already applicable during the winter truce period, from November 1 to March 31, and now it will be applicable all year round.

The power cut will be replaced by a power limitation to 1 kVA, which allows several essential uses to be maintained, such as lighting, plugging in a charger, or operating kitchen appliances such as a refrigerator.

France’s leading electricity provider stated in a press release that “this measure will apply in all cases, unless there is a physical or technical impossibility to limit the electrical supply power of the dwelling.”

This decision comes in the context of rising energy prices currently affecting France โ€“ and more broadly, Europe.
