Patrick Allemand announced last Monday (November 17) to the activists his resignation from his position as the 1st federal secretary of the PS in Alpes Maritimes. The election of the new departmental leader will take place on December 3rd.
Two candidates have declared: Xavier Garcia, the current spokesperson of the Federation and who aligns with the national majority, and Jean-François Verdier who is supported by the various factions of the socialist left.
Following statements from Alain Delcasse and David Nakache in favor of the latter, we receive that of Khaled Ben Abderahmane who expresses support for Xavier Garcia.
“Patrick Allemand leaves his position having chosen the most opportune moment. In a calm atmosphere and with the concern for ensuring our federation the ability to prepare well for the next congress which will take place in June and to approach upcoming electoral deadlines with serenity. He called for candidates to succeed him and invited socialist activists on December 3rd to come and designate his successor through the most democratic means: the vote of the activists.
Our PS elected officials from the department and the majority of the local representatives of the various currents that animate our party have respected this choice and have committed to this democratic process. A minority, certainly active but very unrepresentative, is trying through political maneuvers to disturb minds with unfounded accusations and irresponsible messages spread in the press and on social networks. This is unworthy of our party where debate has always been permitted internally, not in the public square.
At a time when our federation, which like our party and our government, is weakened, the choice of the next 1st secretary takes on a serious dimension. The successor to Patrick Allemand will have to tackle challenges with major stakes: they will need to lead the battle of the upcoming departmental elections next March and enable our party to achieve the best possible result in a context of distrust in our national policy and allow debate for the preparation of the highly anticipated next congress in June 2015.
We must therefore ensure we elect a man or a woman who will embody both renewal and experience. Who must demonstrate authority with a sense of responsibility. Who unites and whose words are measured. With undeniable human and intellectual qualities and whose behavior has always been irreproachable.
We are fortunate to have such a candidate, and his name is Xavier Garcia.”
