Electoral District No. 5: A scent of a second round… due to lack of participation!

Latest News

Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, achieved 61.09% of the votes in the first round of the by-election, but only 21.15% of the votes of registered voters. He needed to gather at least 25% of the registered voters. Consequently, a second round will take place next Sunday. He has a comfortable lead over the general councillor and municipal socialist councillor of Nice, Paul Cuturello (20.74%), the communist Ghislain Gianno (5.55%), Bruno Ligonie (National Front) at 4.83%, Pierre-Antoine Plaquevent, without label but close to the far-right group “Identitaires” (4.61%), and Axel Hvidsten (MEI) at 3.17%.

In June 2007, Christian Estrosi had won the election with 60.08% of the votes. He was already ahead of Paul Cuturello (15.78%). He then stepped down to take care of the Ministry of Overseas. His deputy, Charles Ange Ginésy, resigned after the last municipal elections. This Sunday, May 18, Christian Estrosi is widely in the lead, unsurprisingly. Unless there is a major upset, he should regain his seat as a deputy in a week.

What to take away from this by-election? Firstly, the low turnout. Only 34% of the voters went to the polls. Tired of the elections or demotivated by the lack of suspense in the election, the residents of the 5th district of Alpes-Maritimes preferred to stay at home or enjoy the sun. Will they be more motivated by a second round? Answer in six days.

Reaction Patrick Allemand:
Christian ESTROSI, still a master of deception.
The by-election was not the triumphant march expected by Christian ESTROSI, despite a very active campaign.
He communicates a 17% increase in the two Nice cantons compared to the municipal elections, omitting to mention that this time he was the only candidate from the parliamentary right, which was not the case last March when Jacques PEYRAT was also a candidate. The only comparison that matters is that of election to election.

Furthermore, the percentages should not mask the loss of voter confidence in Christian ESTROSI, who is the big victim of the massive abstention that penalized this by-election.

Indeed, the UMP candidate had obtained 32,580 votes on June 10, 2007, against 18,511 yesterday. He lost 14,069 votes between the two elections!

This allows, just as well as a better mobilization of the left-wing electorate, for Paul Cuturello to improve his score by nearly 5%.

During the second round next Sunday, the Cuturello vote must become the political outlet for all those who are unhappy with the current government policy and who chose to express it in the first round by abstaining.

Reaction of Bruno Ligonie (FN):
“The king is naked!”
Christian Estrosi wanted to become king.
The voters reminded him that this is not their priority.
Even with 61.09%, he could not be elected in the first round, having failed to gather 25% of the registered voters. Just 21.15%!
There will therefore be a second round. What a setback!

As for the result of the National Front and its candidate Bruno Ligonie, we have gathered 4.84% of the voters who made the effort to go despite a foregone vote!

We salute and thank the 1466 people, who continue to trust us despite the media coverage very largely in favor of the “little king”, and the activists who mobilized to ensure our presence in this difficult election.

Let’s be clear that this is only a by-election and such a situation is rarely favorable to us. We will avoid drawing conclusions about the future that could only be erroneous. Especially with an abstention rate of over 65%.

Since the 2008 municipal and cantonal elections, the National Front of the Alpes-Maritimes has started a rebuild and a march forward under the impulsion of Lydia Schénardi, Member of the European Parliament.
