The year of mourning is over, and the Promenade des Anglais is (metaphorically) reopening its doors…
IRONMAN France Nice 2017 will mark the return of events to the Promenade des Anglais, following a year of mourning after the tragic attack on July 14, 2016.
Without forgetting what happened and with utmost respect, the athletes, the public, and the volunteers will have a strong remembrance for the victims and their loved ones.
IRONMAN France Nice is much more than an event; this triathlon represents the stories of thousands of athletes and memories for the public and volunteers. The Promenade des Anglais and the Nice hinterland host one of the world’s benchmarks.
The athletes will start from the Plage du Centenaire, in the clear waters of the Mediterranean to complete a 3.8 km route broken down into two loops. The bike course is a true gem, leading athletes into the heart of the Nice hinterland and through picturesque villages. With nearly 1,800 meters of positive elevation, the bike course will offer athletes landscapes of breathtaking panoramas. The running race will be held in 4 round trips along the legendary Promenade des Anglais.
From a sporting perspective, this 2017 edition will leave its mark on history as a triathlon legend will be at the start! Rob Barel, with his 10 podiums, including a World Champion title in 1994 in Nice, will be one of the attractions of the day.
Among the professionals, a great competition is expected between regulars Fred Van Lierde and Victor Del Corral, and stars of the discipline like Eneko Llanos, Alessandro Degasperi, Viktor Zyemstev, or Denis Chevrot.
Among the women, Lisa Roberts returns to the Promenade des Anglais after two podiums and a fourth place in 2013, 2014, and 2015. She will compete for the victory against Emma Bilham, runner-up last year, Annabel Luxford, and Carrie Lester.
2,100 athletes from 68 nationalities are registered, each with their own story and will live their own adventure.
Magnus Norman, former world No. 2 in Tennis and coach of Stanislas Wawrinka, will be at the start alongside Johan, a visually impaired athlete who will take on the challenge of swimming 3.8 km, cycling 180 km, and running a marathon, as he did in 2015. Samuel Etienne will leave his post as the host of the game show โQuestion for a Championโ to attempt to cross the magnificent IRONMAN finish line once again.
