End of mandatory receipts: “For us, it doesn’t change anything”

Latest News

Since August 1, 2023, the end of automatic receipt printing applies to all retailers. In Nice, Garibaldi Square, however, this doesn’t seem to impact them.

For nearly two weeks now, you no longer automatically leave your shopping with a receipt. The receipt is no longer mandatory. It is now printed only at the customer’s request. This measure was taken by the State as part of a policy to fight against waste and hazardous substances for health.

Retailers must now implement digital alternatives to allow customers access to the valuable receipt: SMS, email, or directly on the app of the specific store. In Nice, not all retailers are reacting the same way to this measure.

“We ask customers if they want us to print it or not”

On Garibaldi Square, several retailers or restaurateurs had already implemented this system. That’s the case at La Maioun, where we were told it changes nothing for them, since “we were already doing it before.”

Basile Boutin, a manager at the Naturalia on the square, explains the new process when a customer arrives at the checkout. “We ask them if they want us to print it or not. If we don’t print it, the customer receives an email with their digital receipt. It happens automatically.”, explains the manager.

“It’s a habit that is disappearing”

“The majority of our customers aren’t very happy with this decision. They wonder how to check prices, to be sure we haven’t made a mistake. It’s a habit that is disappearing, it’s disturbing for them,” confides Basile Boutin. While this decision was made primarily for ecological reasons, it doesn’t seem to win unanimous support among customers.

However, not all businesses have yet implemented the end of the automatic receipt. This is the case with the Little Boho restaurant. The business points out the “good initiative” of the measure. It will, however, be applied at the start of the school year in September.
