The last Frenchwoman in the singles draw, Fiona Ferro will not string together a 19th consecutive victory, facing seed No. 4 Sofia Kenin (2-6; 6-2; 6-1).
A battle of fighters. That’s how one could summarize this match between two rising tennis hopes. Fiona Ferro, 23 years old, has been the French player in form since the start of the summer. Promised a bright future, the Azurean stands out for her mental toughness and game intelligence, able to adapt to her opponent to make them err. On the other side, Sofia Kenin, 21 years old, already winner of the Australian Open earlier this year, embodies the future of American tennis.
Aggressive at the start of each set, the American was met with the determination of the Valbonne native in the first set. Slightly tense, Fiona quickly pulled herself together to turn the tide in the first set.
Struggling with her second serve in the second set, Ferro gradually lost the thread of the match. The much more aggressive American raised her game level and unsettled the Frenchwoman to bring it back to one set all.
Towards the end of the match, the accumulation of minutes on the court (nearly 9 hours in four matches) took its toll on the legs of the Azurean, who couldn’t respond to Kenin’s powerful shots as she quickly pulled ahead. Ferro couldn’t find the solution against one of the favorites for the final victory in this 2020 edition.
The Frenchwoman fell in three sets (2-6; 6-2; 6-1) after 1 hour and 47 minutes of play.
